Long Island Advocate earns honors in Press Club of Long Island contest

The Long Island Advocate recently took home three honors in the Student Journalism Division, including awards for News Story, Narrative Sporting Reporting and Best Website. Among the honorees were:

The judges remarked, “This excellent tribute to a beloved retiring head-coach is both well-crafted and revealing of how successes achieved and sacrifices made fill a life spent in sport.”

Of The Advocate’s third-place finish for Best Website, the judges said, “Lives up to its mission to highlight hyperlocal journalism and issues that matter to the local community.”

Work with La Tribuna Hispana

Additionally, journalism professor Scott Brinton, who advises and edits The Long Island Advocate, was awarded third place for Spanish-language Reporting for his work with the Hempstead-based La Tribuna Hispana, covering immigrants within the Hempstead-Uniondale area who in early 2025 were self-deporting to their home countries because of President Trump’s immigration policy.
