Yaw Bonsu, The Long Island Advocate’s sports and video editor, has placed in the Top 20 in the Video Feature category of the 2022-23 Hearst Journalism Awards, a national competition that attracts contestants from many of America’s highest-rated journalism programs.
Bonsu, a member of the class of 2024, placed 11th in this year’s competition for a series of video features that he produced and published on The Advocate this fall semester, along with one for the National Association of Black Journalists Student Projects Broadcast.
This is the second year that Bonsu has placed in the Top 20 of the Hearst Awards. Last year he was ninth in the Audio News and Features Competition.

Bonsu is also the associate sports director at Hofstra’s WRHU Radio and was one of the three National Desk anchors for “Hofstra Votes Live 2022,” a four-hour election night simulcast. This past June, Bonsu was named both Best College TV and Best College Radio reporter in the Press Club of Long Island Media Awards.
