Podcast: ICE casts shadow of uncertainty over Jackson Heights, Queens

Throughout the country and across the New York Metropolitan area, immigrant communities are facing a range of new challenges due to the impact increased immigration enforcement is having on their neighborhoods. In Jackson Heights, Queens, known as one of the most diverse and vibrant neighborhoods in the city, many residents are living with uncertainty amid a wave of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids over the past several months.

For many families in the area, daily routines have been altered as a result of the concerns surrounding detention and deportation, affecting everything from work and school attendance to participation in community life.

New York State Sen. Jessica Ramos on March 3 this year. She spoke with reporter Mat Gomez for this report. The senator has represented District 13, including Elmhurst, East Elmhurst, Corona and Jackson Heights, since 2019.

However, while fear often shapes the daily lives of these residents, cultural ties and community spaces continue to provide a sense of refuge and resilience. Open gathering spaces allow residents to feel safe and comfortable discussing social issues, while traditions such as music help preserve a sense of identity, foster community, and sustain hope and optimism about the future.
